Tradition Golf Club feels like a step away from the busier side of Myrtle Beach golf. Set in Pawleys Island on old rice-plantation ground, it gives groups a polished South Strand round built around generous fairways, protected greens, mature trees, wetlands, and a calm parkland rhythm.
Designed by Ron Garl and opened in 1995, Tradition plays as a par 72 and stretches to 6,875 yards from the Tournament tees. It is challenging without acting hostile, which makes it a strong fit for mixed groups that still want real strategy.
The course is known for its creative but straightforward design, with rolling fairways, medium-sized TifDwarf greens, well-placed bunkers, and water that appears on key holes rather than every time the scorecard blinks.
Tradition also brings one of the area’s better warm-up setups, including a large practice complex with putting, pitching, and chipping areas. It is a course that lets players arrive, settle in, and then go find out whether their short game packed a suitcase.

How Tradition plays.
Tradition is playable, but it is not sleepy. Fairways give golfers room, then the greens, bunkers, waste areas, water, and island-green moments ask for better approach control. The course rewards a complete bag more than a single loud driver.
- Use the fairway width. The tee shots often look inviting, but the best position usually depends on the approach angle into protected greens.
- Watch the water holes. Water is not constant, but when it appears it matters. The island-green holes are the round’s little lie detector.
- Respect the waste bunkers. Several holes use large sandy areas to shape strategy. They are scenic until your ball starts renting space in them.
